Name: Of Rare Herbs and Old Men

Objective: An old man fainted in a pharmacy while ordering a herb to cure his illness. Unfortunately, the herb is out of stock, and may only be found in a place in Tear Desert that is infested with monsters. Go get it!
Reward: 100J and a trinket that can be used once per post that spawns a piece of bacon whenever activated.

The heat was taking a toll on the little exceed, the sun had been shining on her fur for three hours now. She was thirsty, but as she brought the one bottle of water she carried to her lips she discovered she had already drank all of it. Hovering high above the hot sandy landscape with her wings spread her eyes scouted for any ruins or oasis, the first two hours for the herb she was going to collect, but in the last hour she just wanted to refresh herself with cool water. Having underestimated the mission she started regretting it.

Maybe this mission was a mistake.. This desert is too big for just one exceed. Just how am I going to find a plant in this rotten wasteland!

She started to frown.

Ow! I should’ve never walked into that pharmacy, but I just had to be curious about what the commotion was about and walk in there didn’t I. And now I’m overheating without an oasis in sight! Okay, calm down Debby.. Take a breath. I’m going to be fine. I’m just going to get that herb and collect my 100 jewels, and I’ll be treating myself to the best ice-cream in town.

Momoe surely had a reason to be in the scorching heat like this, with the sunbeating down on him. Once thought of something so beautiful, was now a burden. He could feel his pores seeping sweaty as he wiped it away. A cloak with a Fairy Tail Insignia across his back, a large one in the back. A small one on the front. The boy ambled at a nice pace, with each step making a sort of rattle that followed a hefty step. He seemed to have an okay sense of direction, not looking lost or anything, his eyes peeled for his goal at the moment.

Of course, his intentions were much different than the exceeds, as was his reasoning for being there. All seemed lost, and he was about to give up and go home when he spotted ... something in the distance? Curiously he'd begin to rush towards the exhausted cat, only to stop when he noticed it was not only humanoid like. But, also it had a full on wingspan, angelic like wings sprouted out with enough strength to carry it. Amazingly enough, they did not seem to flap while he heard a rather mystical chant from the magic flowing behind Aera. He was certainly impressed.

The exceed looked mostly onward to the horizon, desperate for a ruin or oasis. Though the heat made anything in the distance blurry so that wasn’t very helpful. As she hovered through the sky with occasional flapping of her wings to retain momentum she suddenly felt as if she was being watched. On guard she halted mid sky and inspected the sandy planes beneath and behind her, discovering there was indeed a person staring at her!

Though she usually avoided other intelligent life, this was a very welcome surprise. A person! Maybe he has water? She thought to herself. Debby didn’t hesitate for a moment longer and flew down to the human, her tiny red heels meeting with the sandy planes. She lifted the spell, causing the wings to disappear in a glittery mist that was carried off by the wind. Her hands made her way to her waist, her head tilting backwards so she could look up at the boy in front of her, eyes narrow because of the bright sky. As she inspected him she noticed the Fairy Tail guild symbol on his cloak.

This made her biased about him, since in her eyes guild wizards were but a bunch of pretenders, taking strength in their numbers while having no real affections for each other. She had a warm and soothing voice, yet her intonation was clearly derisive. “And what is a guild wizard doing in the desert all by himself? Shouldn’t you be hanging around with your friends?”

Momoe widen his eyes as she came to a landing, he thought for a second it was a hawk. But, an exceed was truly a sight to behold. The wizard only became even more baffled when she began to talk. Knowing it was a sentient being kept from picking her up and hugging the ever loving shrimp out of her. A faint vermilion welling visibly in his cheeks, as she approached and even talked to him in such a strange way.

"It's a long story ... They're not my friends ..." he said rather bitterly, but also lacing his words with confusion. Clearly, the actions of one had made him think a little otherwise. When memories like came to mind he clenched his fist a little. The mystical floating sound that followed area had disappeared when the magic dispelled, it was a rather amusing thing to see.

He decided to keep his distance while flicking his hands out of his cloak, keeping arms planted full at his side, with nothing in them. A clear sign of trying to put the exceed at ease. Showing he was both unarmed and not hostile.

"I'm here investigating a rumour on an item I'm looking for is all .. I've been here for a few hours without a smidgen of luck ..."

To enter the tear desert on a rumor could only mean one thing, that he was out of his mind or the item he was looking for was very valuable. The devious smile that formed on her face was a clear sign that this peaked her interest. This boy was now useful in another way besides safety in numbers and the possibility of water, all the more reason to team up. She put one paw to her face, the other still in her side. “That’s a coincidence. I am here to find a herb, though I don’t suppose you’ve seen it.”

She rested her arm beside her body, the other reaching in to her brassiere to collect a picture of the herb in question. She stretched out her arm to the wizard to show it to him, but he was going to have to bend over if he wanted to have a closer look or take the picture from her paw. Debby cleared her throat with a high noise before speaking up. “Since we’re both looking for something, why don’t we help each other out. We’re both wizards, so if we combine our qualities we have a better chance of achieving our goals”

The exceed started to walk again, figuring the boy would tag along to continue the conversation. Clearly she was having trouble as her tiny heels sunk into the hot sand with each step, it was extremely inconvenient footwear for nonsolid grounds. The end of her tail was curled around an empty bottle, holding on to it in case she could refill at an oasis. She finally decided to introduce herself, with an irritated tone since the heat, thirst and now sand was taking its toll on her “I’m Debby by the way.”

Her mouth was running out of saliva by now, so she had no choice but to ask about it even though she preferred to mooch up to someone before asking for a favor. Though perhaps victimizing herself would work in her favor. She concluded that from his blushing when they first spoke. Her ears and tail lowered, paws fiddling with each other as she looked at him with sad eyes. “I’m thirsty.. Do you have some water for me?”

Momoe saw the devious look on the exceed's face, and raised a brow to that. It seemed to pass, and he remained silent on the matter only listening as he stared at the sentient being, who was not human. He did not believe she could possibly do him harm given her appearance. "An herb, you say?" he says with a rather curious tone, lacing each word in a knowing happiness. He seemed to have lighten up from the gloomy, downtrodden person he normally was around this cat.

He'd slowly shift his feet and lowered himself down towards the ground, crouching while standing on his feet to get a good look at the picture. "Ahhh... Those things?" the boy answers while eyeing her tail, his blush increasing when he noticed it on her tail. Finding even the smallest things so adoring, even though it had to be insignificant, and silly to think that way.

The way she talked already had him feeling sorry, "Water? Of course .. I've come prepared." he said while pulling out a smallish orb with aquatic symbols on them. He held it up to her. "This is a chilled water lacrima. Fresh water at near freezing temperatures ...." he'd explain while pointing over at her container. "Open up your container ... Then I'll help you find the Desert Sage ..."

A hopeful spark popped up in her eyes when Momoe recognized the plant in the picture, could it be that he knew where to look? When she resumed walking and suggested they work together he didn’t say much. She glanced over for a moment to inquire about his response, but it appeared the wizard was distracted by her tail. She was too occupied with attempting to walk in the sand to demand a response however, and assumed his silence equaled agreement.

Meanwhile her thirst kicked in an she asked him for water. He generously complied and offered to refill her bottle with a water lacrima, her ears immediately perking up and her sad façade dropping like leaves in autumn. She stopped in her tracks to face him, transferred the bottle from her tail to her hands and opened it. Debby felt very lucky to have stumbled upon this wizard, he gave her hope and relieve. Her hands that held the opened bottle reached out to him so he could refill her bottle. “Thank you”

Although she gave him a friendly smile out of gratitude, inside she was certain their incentives for helping each other were identical. To her the kindness he was showing her now was but an assurance of his own success. Speaking of which, she had to know who to look for if he turned on her, and he hadn’t returned her introduction yet. “What’s your name?”

Momoe knew what the plant was, but did not entirely commit it to memory. Though he had a sure feeling he had saw it in his travels through the tear desert; it was on his face that had a so-so expression, although on the more sombre side. It was clear he was not intent in smiling, despite enjoying the presence of the exceed. The water lacarima gushed water with an audible flow of water filling her bottle without spilling a drop. When it was all said and done he'd pull away, and put it back in his pack. "There you are, Debby." he'd say raising up towards her, his hand moved out for her, but stopped before he could pet her. Resisting every urge to pet the feline with all his meet, despite how much it killed his soul.

"Momoe Kita, and I'm glad to help. I'd be saddend to leave a poor, cute thing such as yourself out here thirsty and alone to deal with those monsters.." he'd say in a moot tone, looking down at her, he assumed she wanted to get a move on. His expression became more sheepish, as played with the hem of his shirt nervously, while his tone peeped up to match:

"But, surely you shouldn't walk around in those shoes? As pretty as those heels are they're a pain on the feet ... Would you like me to carry you..?" he offers.

Once her bottle was full she immediately started drinking from it, gulping small sips of water down her tiny throat. She nearly choked on the refreshment when he called her cute, poor, and basically defenseless, but thankfully managed to shut her airway just in time before any water could enter. Her thirst wasn’t sated until only half her bottle remained, which wasn’t so bad since now the weight was less for her to carry. And if she wanted a refill all she had to do was ask.

At first she was insulted and pouted with a frown on her face. She screwed the cap back onto the bottle and wrapped the end of her tail around it, her hands now free again. The other clearly liked her exotically, cooing on her like she was some kind of pet. It was very demeaning and she hated it, but it appeared she had to bear with him until she found the cursed herb. Nevertheless she got defensive about it “No! I am not some defenseless being, I am an exceed! I can certainly handle walking”

She turned around and started walking again, this time her right heel sinking deep enough into the sand for it to get stuck in it, baring her pink paw pads as her paw slipped out of it. She immediately moved her hand into the sand to dig up her heel, and held it upside down so sand could pour out of it. “Ow!”

In an irritated fashion she slipped her heel back on, reconsidering the offer that the boy made her. Of course she could fly, but that would deplete her magic power, and it was best not to waste any if she didn’t have to. Being carried was demeaning depending on how she interpreted it, it could also work to her advantage. It wouldn’t be the first time she got men to do her bidding to make life easier for her. On that note it wasn’t such a bad idea, her irritation fading at the prospect of not having to walk. “Fine. You can carry me. But I will not degrade myself to being cradled. Just seat me on your shoulder.”

Momoe looked down at her, lacking a look of pity. "Of course, I know you're more than able to walk and get around. It was an offer as I know the harsh Desert can wear even the strongest down..." he explains, his lips falter as he tries to resist smiling with a light chomp onto his lips. When the sands began to claim the exceed's foot he was ready and willing to help, but already she was doing it herself. The way she scolded him only made his face scald red further.

As to her exclaims of not being demeaned he was more than willing to put her on his shoulder. Though, it'd be a outright lie he was not disappointed with the lack of hugging and snuggling this creature ALL over. "Sides ... No reason to tire your wings, right?" he says while he chastely wraps his lithe, smooth hands around her sides and lifts her up onto his shoulder.

"Though if you'd like .. You could sit on my forearm too if my shoulder is not comfy enough." he responds while making careful strides in the way he came form, each brought a small little jingle of his keys at his side.

Debby didn’t want to, but she giggled when she was picked up. She was a little ticklish, and the boy’s fingers were gentle enough to cause a sensation. Once comfortably seated on the boy’s shoulder the hands left her sides. She sighed in relief that the moment was short lived, and tried to adjust to her newfound transportation. Keeping her balance was do-able since the other walked carefully, so she could relax for now. The only thing that still bugged her was the heat of the sun, but that would be over as soon as she’d find her herb. When he offered his arm as optional sitting area she nodded a no. “I’m fine.”

As she relaxed her mind wondered off, thinking of scenarios where she’d find the herb, find whatever the other was looking for, and benefit of the profit. Though her thoughts got polluted by the idea of monsters, and realized as they had to fight that she didn’t know what magic he used. Awaking from her thoughts she gently shook her head, realizing that if they were to stumble upon real monsters she would at least have to know what magic he used. From where she was seated they couldn’t really make eye contact, but that didn’t matter to her. “Momoe, was it?”

She wanted to confirm in case he somehow caused her trouble. “What type of magic do you wield?”

Such a giggle from a harden personality such as Debby made his blush scald his face deeply. He did not want to show weakness to her, but he found her so adoring that he was having so much trouble focusing. A ticklish kitty? Very hard to resist ... But, with every ounce of will power feasible, he'd manage. He'd steady the cat with her help and then began a slow stride in the proper direction, south from which he came from.

He wandered towards the area he was sure he saw the herb she spoke of. "I'm sure I saw Desert Sages ... But, we may have to deal with a monster or two to get to it." he warns. To her question he just smiles.

"Little personal thing to ask someone you just met, Debby..." he scolds nicely. Adding a small, but silent chuckle as to not add insult to injury. "But, I use Celestial Spirit Magic .. I actually got a Lynx Spirit in my mits .. But, she's a little ...... High Spirited you could say.." he puns. Resisting his terrible, sly joke. If he could open up to anybody, it was probably something that wasn't human, and Debby was the perfect candidate.

Celestial spirit magic, this explained a whole lot. She had a prejudice for celestial wizards, for not a very smart one once asked her who her master was. The dumb girl in question walked around with a Plue and introduced it to her as a spirit. She was so offended that she assumed that all spirits were, small, cute, dumb, and useless companions like the Plue was, and that all celestial mages were collectors of these powerless creatures.

She couldn’t care less about this boy’s spirits, and was disappointed that he wasn’t going to be much help in a fight. Of all mages I have to run into a celestial one.. But beggars can’t be choosers. She thought and raised her chin. “I guess that means I will be the one fighting those monsters then.”

There was a hint of arrogance in her voice. She thought of him as an inferior mage, whereas she was fully confident in her own combat skills. She had no interest in fighting unless it was necessary though, and would have normally used the boy as a decoy for the monsters while she made off with the herb. She couldn’t do that now however, still interested in what kind of valuable item he was looking for. “What kind of item are you looking for anyway? It must be rare if it’s worth entering this stupid desert”

Momoe raised a brow at her statement, unaware of the prejudiced behind it. "Why do you assume that? I am perfectly combat able, Debby." he murrs in a low tone, though to much surprise he makes no jabs at her size or anything. "I am sure we can work together if one should arise ..." the boy comments in a sure tone. A hand slowly rising up, an accidental brush against her side as he places a hand on her shoulder.
"I won't let any harm come to you." he says in a powerful tone, laced with a little possessive tone to it. It was not every day he could get a long with someone, as he despised most people. But, Debby was different. She was not the humans he lost faith in, not to mention she was not pushy ... And, of course the fact she was an adorable cat-person thing was a huge plus!

He'd continue to amble along the path, sure enough plants were spotted in the distance, as the plain desert breaks to show not just sand. But, basic dry schrubs and little trees you expect. Of course ... This plant was of considerable value to the life around it. There lies a pack of Desert Wolves that decided to rest. Momoe kept his distance, "Enemy spotted ..." he says while ducking below, the wolves ears twitch and they raise up. But, Momoe seems to have some skill in hiding, even with a little person on his shoulder.

A hand dips to his side, and slides a key off the ring in preparation.

A startled giggle escaped Debby’s mouth as the wizard’s hand brushed against her side. Though before she could voice her discontent about the surprise tickle the wizard spoke up about protecting her. This greatly disturbed her, she considered his words to be belittling and was annoyed by the physical contact. With a strongly disinterested expression she slapped his hand off her shoulder. She was feminine in her actions so it couldn’t have hurt, but it did make a statement.

Unbelievable! He thinks I’m on the same level as his pathetic spirits! Well I’m not like his stupid exotic pets. He’ll be sorry next time he belittles me like this! Why am I even still traveling with this loser? Right, the herb.. Desert Sage apparently. And he was looking for something valuable. I guess I’ll have to bear with him for now. She thought.

Interested in the item Momoe was looking for she inquired about it, but before he could answer he spotted an enemy. He ducked rather suddenly, making her lose her balance. She was fast though and jumped off his shoulder herself, the distance between him and the ground smaller now anyway. She frowned as she stared at the wolves. She could outrun them easily with her magic, or fly over them, but attacking an entire pack by herself was a risk for injury. She avoided injuries at all costs, thus she had to calculate her approach if she was going to overcome this obstacle with a celestial wizard.

She counted the pack, which consisted of seven wolves in total. She knew she could take out three without risking injury, and concluded if she used Momoe as a decoy for the other four she could take those out when she finished up with the first half. She imagined the human would get injured with his Plue-like spirits to protect him, but she cared only for her own wellbeing so it didn’t matter. She looked at him with a serious expression. “There’s seven of them. I’ll take out three, you take out four”

That said she focused on her magic to regain her Edolas form, her body very curvy and outgrowing Momoe in height even. Though since they were both ducking it wouldn’t be too obvious. Her heels and dress had magical properties that allowed them to grow and shrink along with her body. She smiled at him in kittenish fashion, a lot more comfortable in her original form. Her voice was a little seductive. “After you”
